Hip Mobility: Why It Matters and 2 Exercises to Improve It.

Back to Barefoot - Episode 5

Video Transcript

Hi everyone, today we're going to talk about hip mobility. The lower limb is made up of three joints: the hip, the knee, and the ankle. For a lower limb to function well, it needs to move at all three levels. Today we're showing you two hip mobility exercises.

Sit comfortably with your hands behind you, and move your knees side to side like windshield wipers, trying not to lift your glutes off the ground, or lifting them as late as possible. Your feet start slightly wider than hip-width apart.

Once this feels comfortable, is no longer painful, and doesn't cause any stiffness, do the same thing without using your hands. Here, spread your feet a bit wider, and keep trying to bring your knees down to each side without lifting your glutes.

Third step, which includes a light stretch of the glute muscles: I come back up and sit down very slowly, leaning forward, before switching sides and doing the same on the other side. I sit down as slowly as possible and feel a stretch in my glute muscles. You can do this routine daily. What matters here is consistency, more than quantity.

Second hip mobilization exercise.

Thank you.
